Worm Stampede, Vermicomposting Revisited

Well, it happened.  The worms tried to escape, in the living room!  Yep, we all knew that this day might come, some of us feared it more than others.  Some of you warned me.  You were right!

The worms have been doing very well.  They have been working hard to make dirt for us and doing a very good job of it.  We save all of our food scraps and to be honest, the worms are just not keeping up!  We have even resorted to freezing some of our scraps to save for a later date.  Today, however, John used the scraps we had left sitting on the counter all week, in an ice cream container, covered.  Let's just say they were a little putrid.  I prefer not to smell putrid first thing in the morning so, I left the room when he pulled out the Ninja to chop up the food for our worms.  I was getting ready for the day and when I came back into the living room I found him, on the floor, leaned over the worm bed,  apologizing and warning me that the worms were all trying to escape.  They were about to be all over the living room floor.  We aren't really sure what happened, but we know that our normally docile worms were scurrying up the sides of the container trying very hard to get our of their home.

John quickly went into action, and carried the worms out of the house.  He said placing them in the sun would help make them want to go back into their worm bedding.  I wasn't really concerned with what the sun would do, but liked the idea of taking the worms out of the living room.  This worked, somewhat.  He began quickly getting another Rubbermaid container ready with bedding to transfer the worms from whatever it was that was making them want to leave their home.  So now, we have two worm beds.

John said that he found lots and lots of new babies in their so that is a plus.  We are a little ahead of schedule now, they were supposed to spend another month in the first worm bed but at least we know that they are working hard making dirt and babies, and thankfully, they are doing it in their bed tonight and not on my living room floor.

Until we meet again.
